Updating the Realms for 4.0?

Yack and I were discussing this in chat and I wondered what others views would be. Here is what we talked about:

Kilsek: hey do you think they will update FR in the 4.0?

To gather my thoughts a bit more on this, i think it would be great if they started making modules not just based around the main areas of the realms (such as Waterdeep,Cormyr, shadowdale and the north) it would be great if they did some in the south like at Haalruaa(sp?) or even Chult or the Black Jungles or even Thay!
The realms is massive and great spot and it makes me mad when people think of the realms they only think of Waterdeep and the ones mentioned above.
One of the resons why i started my campaign in Tethyr and its slowly moving more south maybe even a little more east.

Note to self.... go north, ASAP!

Most important point : they will adapt it only if it sells enough.

After that, it all will depend on the "tone" of 4th edition : if it's only a minor adaptation of 3rd edition, or if it's a complete departure from it. In this case, they may discard the realms and create an all-new modern setting for the all-new 4th edition.

And right now, I don't have a clue of what they'll do. It seems unreasonable to discard the realms since there is so much material available, but they would have to gather a new generation of young players for 4E (like they did for 3E) since I don't see the older players buying another "drows of the underdark" or "moonsea" books in the future, even in 10 years because so many old books are floating around... Only newer players would buy a 4E new "Waterdeep" book IMO.
OR (as it has been said), they would have to develop areas they never wrote much about like Thay, anauroch, etc.

My take is that they will keep the realms, have a new 4E "boxed set" (or book) for it, but they will focus they efforts on a brand new setting. Right now, that's what I would do anyway.

My biggest fear is that Eberron will be the default setting. Blech!!

Officially, there are only 2 settings supported : FR and Eberron. All the others are dead.
(of course, if you were talking about AD&D, you are right...)
What I see in 4E is either FR + New setting, or Eberron + New setting, or keep FR + Eberron.
Choose...

If they kill off FR, I am done with WOTC!

I dont know yet. If FR gets a update I will. Still not sure

I'm not, so I'm not sure why I even care. The only thing I'm planning on buying when 4e comes out is all the sourcebooks for 3e that I don't have cheap on ebay.

Heard from FLGS not long ago that Eberron will be the new default setting which in my opion sucks. (why pick a setting that is so not D&D compare to the other 2 (FR/GH)?
