RPG Starter Set Empty
PostSubject: RPG Starter Set   RPG Starter Set EmptyMon Sep 15, 2008 11:53 pm

This is set to be released in November - new boxed set? There's a photo of the front cover in the info I have, and looking closely, it says "INCLUDES DICE, DUNGEON TILES AND TOKENS" Does it make any sense to anyone here to release any "starter" set for 4.0 without minis? Or am I missing something? Anyone have inside info?

There could be a number of reasons.

1. They just didn't include that it has minis in it.

2. It doesn't include a way to keep track of PCs & Monsters. While it wouldn't cost much to throw in some c/uc creatures like previous basic games, it may get you purchasing their boosters.

3. Anyone remember the old black box AD&D set that came with fold-up paper cutouts with pictures printed on them? Highly illogical, but a possibility.

Either way, I'm interested in seeing what ends up being put in the set.

Maybe it's a cunning plan so they get you interested into the game via the books and the starter kit, then you have to go and buy the stuff to play, almost as if it were false advertising which draws people to go get what they need to play.

To be honest, I don't agree with this at all, having this sceme is not only disshonest to the buyer, but if I had this treatment, I would have NEVER got into RPG's D&D in the first place..

This may seem a good idea at first, but it can only lead to bad results.

PostSubject: Re: RPG Starter Set   RPG Starter Set EmptySun Jan 18, 2009 2:18 am

I forgot to mention this after I saw it in store.

I nearly purchased this, as I thought it would have a quick-run little game for new PCs (and so I could try out DMing in 4.0). Then I saw what was in place of the miniatures.

Cardstock tokens with pictures printed on them.

Not a bad idea to reduce cost of production by a fraction of a few cents, but I don't really need any tokens, and the reason I would have purchased this was for the miniatures.

I may still purchase it, depending on what the tokens include. I know it will be on sale at all the FLGSs around here, and I could use a few treasure chest/furniture markers. Heck, I could even use the monster tokens if I don't feel like dropping money on the miniatures (and right now, I really don't).

Come to think of it, the token market could be very lucrative for Wizards. I'd buy a pack of furniture tokens right off the shelf if it would save me downloading a picture, resizing said picture, printing said picture, and making sure it was perfectly in scale with the miniatures. I'd buy it without question if it was the same kind of material the dungeon tiles use.

That's unfortunate, but not surprising.

I was wondering what the floor tiles are like; are they reprints of existing Dungeon Tiles, or are they new ones?
